The chief executive of Fox Filmed Entertainment said Monday the U.S. should join France in cutting off the Internet connection of users who repeatedly download copyright-protected films.
CEO Jim Gianopulos said Internet piracy is the single biggest threat to the film industry worldwide, and independent films are the hardest hit.
"The bad news is that the Internet is big, and it's anonymous," Gianopulos told a news conference in Athens.
A compromise reached in Brussels Thursday by negotiators representing the European Union's Parliament, Council, Commission and 27 member states has cleared the way to pass sweeping telecommunications legislation containing a key provision that establishes Internet-access protection for consumers. Previously the telecom reform bill had stalled over disagreements among EU member states about the degree to which access to the Internet should be protected.

Our own Kris Kotarski in the Calgary Herald:
People who repeatedly download copyrighted films and music could have their Internet connection cut off under proposed laws to tackle illegal file-sharing unveiled by the British government on Tuesday.
The proposal to ban repeat offenders from the Internet, which drew criticism from both civil rights groups and Internet service providers, toughens up the measures being considered in Britain to crack down on online piracy.
Treasury Minister Stephen Timms said that previous plans, which would only have restricted users' broadband speed, did not go far enough.

The European Union has dramatically slashed the rates that wireless carriers can charge consumers roaming across the EU's member states.
Previous rate reductions introduced in 2007 cut the cost of voice roaming calls within the EU by 70 percent. Under the new rules that went into effect Wednesday, noted EU Telecommunications Commissioner Viviane Reding, EU roaming charges have been reduced by a further 60 percent.
As citizens are increasingly discussing and sharing content online, we decided to take a look with the European Centre for Public Affairs at digital discussion and debate in the weeks leading up to the European elections. Covering English, French, German, Greek and Polish language, we asked the following questions: Was there an EU debate or were conversations limited to national politics? What were the most popular themes and how did the rankings compare? Did online “buzz” translate into votes at the ballot box?

Krzysztof Kotarski
First, a note about me.
I am an outsider in the country of my birth.
I am too happy, too trusting, too Canadian. I walk into a shop and expect the shopkeeper to smile. I expect bureaucrats to help me when I seek official documents, and when presented with an idea, I think “why not?” instead of “why?”
