It can sometimes be a little unclear (especially first day of a new year) how the previous year changed the world. No one guessed in 1946 that the Magnetron Spencer Percy was developing for use in a RADAR system (and that subsequently melted a candy bar in his pocket) would one day become the microwave oven. But I like to think that we can make some pretty good guesses about which of this year's innovations are going to be with us, and changing our world, for a good long time.

I've heard of people going to extremes to make biodiesel, but this story has to be the strangest thing I’ve heard in a while. A Beverly Hills doctor is currently under investigation because the fat he removed from his patients was allegedly used to fuel his Ford Explorer and his girlfriend's Lincoln Navigator.

A few short months ago, many of us were under the impression that this year's LA Auto Show would be a great showcasing of a new direction for the worldwide auto industry. Everyone knew about the MINI E and expected to see more hybrids and fuel cell concepts than ever before. How naive we were.

This morning at the LA Auto Show, Green Car Journal named the Volkswagen Jetta TDI 2009 Green Car of the Year. This is the first time that a diesel has been named Green Car of the Year, and to take the top honors it had to best stiff competition from microcars and hybrids alike. However, you have to keep in mind that the award has only been given since 2005, so it hasn't actually taken that long for a diesel to take top honors.
